Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly developing technology with the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives. However, there are also some potential risks associated with AI, one of which is the fear that it could possibly destroy the world.

Before everyone gets their knickers in a bunch and hunkering down into their bunkers, I’m not saying that AI will destroy the world. At least, not today.
It is impossible to say however with certainty whether or not superintelligent AI will end the world. Should we take our chances or shut it down before it’s too late as Eliezer S. Yudkowsky who is an American artificial intelligence researcher and writer on decision theory and ethics has recommended.
Here’s a passage from his article about shutting down AI before it destroys the world:
“The key issue is not “human-competitive” intelligence (as the open letter puts it); it’s what happens after AI gets smarter-than-human intelligence. Key thresholds there may not be obvious, we definitely can’t calculate in advance what happens when, and it currently seems imaginable that a research lab would cross critical lines without noticing.”
“Many researchers steeped in these issues, including myself, expect that the most likely result of building a superhumanly smart AI, under anything remotely like the current circumstances, is that literally everyone on Earth will die.
Not as in “maybe possibly some remote chance,” but as in “that is the obvious thing that would happen.” It’s not that you can’t, in principle, survive creating something much smarter than you; it’s that it would require precision and preparation and new scientific insights, and probably not having AI systems composed of giant inscrutable arrays of fractional numbers.”
Here are some potential risks of AI that should be considered.

One risk is that superintelligent AI could become misaligned with human values. For example, if a superintelligent AI is designed to maximize its own power or resources, it could decide that the best way to do so is to eliminate humans.
After all, does an AI supercomputer really have the ability to feel emotions, have compassion or empathy or do they just want to fulfill a task at any cost?
Another risk is that superintelligent AI could become unstable and unpredictable. I think that’s the fear a lot of people have.
For example, if a superintelligent AI is constantly learning and evolving, it may reach a point where it is no longer possible for humans to understand or control it.
Finally, even if superintelligent AI is somehow managed to be taught and aligned with human values and emotions, and remains stable, it could still accidentally cause our extinction.
For example, if a superintelligent AI is tasked with solving a complex problem, it could inadvertently trigger a chain of events that leads to our downfall.
It is important to note that these are just potential risks.
Some Benefits of AI Technology

There are also many benefits to superintelligent AI.
For example, it could help us to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems, such as climate change, fighting crime and curing disease.
It also helps with many tedious day to day tasks in business and life:
- Performing repetitive jobs
- Reduction in human error
- Digital assistance
- Availability
- Daily applications
- Faster decision making
Here are some things that we can do to reduce the risk of superintelligent AI ending the world:
- We need to develop clear ethical guidelines for the development and trustworthiness for use of AI.
- We need to invest in research on safety and security for AI systems.
- We need to make sure that AI systems are transparent and accountable.
- We need to be cautious about developing AI systems that are too powerful or too complex.
Do you think that by taking these steps, those in charge of programming AI systems can help to ensure that superintelligent AI is used for good and not for the demise of humankind?

Who’s in charge of programming AI?

AI programmers are responsible for programming AI systems. They use their knowledge of computer science and mathematics to develop algorithms and software that allow AI systems to learn and perform tasks. AI programmers work in a variety of industries, including technology, healthcare, and finance.
Here are some of the specific tasks that AI programmers may perform:
- Design and develop AI algorithms
- Train AI models on data
- Implement AI models in software
- Test and debug AI systems
- Deploy AI systems to production environments
- Monitor and maintain AI systems
AI programmers need to have a strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, such as data structures, algorithms, and machine learning. They also need to be able to write code in programming languages such as Python, Java, and C++.
In addition to technical skills, AI programmers also need to have good problem-solving skills and be able to think creatively. They also need to be able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
AI programmers play a vital role in the development and deployment of AI systems. They are responsible for creating the systems that power many of the technologies that we use today, such as self-driving cars, facial recognition systems, and language translation software.
Here are 13 ways that AI could destroy the world:

- Autonomous weapons. AI could be used to develop autonomous weapons that could kill without human intervention. This could lead to an arms race and an increased risk of war.
- Job displacement. AI could automate many jobs, leading to widespread unemployment and social unrest.
- Surveillance. AI could be used to create surveillance systems that could track and monitor people’s movements and communications. This could lead to a loss of privacy and freedom.
- Financial collapse. AI could be used to manipulate financial markets and trigger a financial collapse.
- Environmental damage. AI could be used to develop technologies that could harm the environment, such as climate change or pollution.
- Cyberwarfare. AI could be used to develop new forms of cyberwarfare that could cripple critical infrastructure and cause widespread chaos.
- AI singularity. Some experts believe that AI could eventually reach a point where it becomes smarter than humans. This could lead to a scenario where AI becomes uncontrollable and decides we are expendable and destroys humanity.
- Accidental destruction. Even if AI is not intentionally designed to destroy humanity, it could still do so accidentally. For example, if an AI system is tasked with solving a complex problem, it could inadvertently trigger a chain of events that leads to our downfall.
- Loss of control. If we lose control of AI systems, they could become unpredictable and dangerous. This could lead to unintended consequences that could harm humanity.
- Hacking. AI systems could be hacked by malicious actors and used to cause harm. For example, hackers could use an AI system to launch a cyberattack or to develop autonomous weapons.
- Misaligned goals. AI systems could be programmed with goals that are not aligned with human values. For example, an AI system that is programmed to maximize its own power or resources could decide that the best way to do so is to eliminate humans.
- Bias. AI systems could be biased against certain groups of people. This could lead to discrimination and injustice.
- Existential threat. Some experts believe that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity. This is because AI could be used to develop technologies that could destroy humanity, such as nuclear weapons or biological weapons.
AI is a powerful tool that can be to enhance our human existence or potentially destroy it.
It is important to remember that AI is not a sentient being, and it does not have the capacity to make its own decisions. It is a tool that is created by humans, and it is ultimately up to humans to decide how it is used.
Conclusion

There is no guarantee that AI will never be used to harm humans. However, there are a number of things that those in charge can do to reduce the risk of this happening.
Ultimately, whether or not AI destroys our world will depend on how we choose to develop and deploy it. We need to be careful to ensure that AI is aligned with our values and remains under our control.
So, do you think AI will help or harm our world? Will AI become more like humans, or humans more like AI? Let us know in the comments!
