TikTok, once synonymous with dance challenges and viral memes, has evolved into a powerful platform for financial education. Known as FinTok, the financial side of TikTok has emerged as a popular resource for Americans seeking money management advice, budgeting tips, and investment strategies. According to new research conducted by Talker Research for Chime, FinTok has empowered Americans with an average of 42 pieces of financial knowledge in 2024, and its influence shows no signs of slowing down.

But why has FinTok become such a trusted and transformative space for financial literacy? Let’s explore the reasons behind its popularity, the trends shaping its content, and how it’s redefining how Americans approach money.
The Shift to Digital Financial Education
Before FinTok, financial advice often came from family (47%) or friends (40%). Social media wasn’t even the go-to source, with only 40% of respondents turning to platforms like Facebook or Instagram for money tips.
However, TikTok’s unique approach to content—short, engaging, and easily digestible videos—has turned it into a hub for practical financial advice.
Interestingly, the younger generations are leading this digital shift. Gen Z users gained an average of 49 pieces of financial knowledge in 2024, followed by millennials with 44, while baby boomers lagged behind with 32. This data highlights how TikTok resonates most with tech-savvy, younger audiences who are accustomed to learning through bite-sized digital content.

Why FinTok Is So Popular
- Accessibility and Simplicity:
FinTok takes complex financial concepts and presents them in a format that’s easy to understand. Whether it’s a quick breakdown of credit scores or tips on budgeting, creators simplify jargon and make financial education approachable. - Relatable Creators:
Financial influencers on TikTok often share personal stories, relatable struggles, and practical advice. This authenticity builds trust and makes financial literacy feel attainable for the average person. - Engaging Trends:
FinTok isn’t just about information—it’s fun. Popular trends like the “100 Envelope Method” or the “No Spend Challenge” are not only informative but also encourage active participation. - Diverse Topics:
From side hustles (38%) to crypto investing (20%) and cash stuffing (17%), FinTok covers a wide range of topics. Users can find content tailored to their specific financial goals, whether it’s paying off debt or building passive income streams. - Sense of Community:
Nearly 76% of users are open about using FinTok for financial planning, and the platform fosters a sense of community where people share tips, experiences, and successes.
FinTok’s Impact in 2024
Despite the experimental nature of FinTok trends, Americans are finding value in the platform. Of the trends tried in 2024, users reported a 44% success rate, with “success” defined as:
- Seeing tangible benefits (46%)
- Learning something new (36%)
- Gaining confidence in financial abilities (33%)
Moreover, 65% of respondents feel more financially secure since using FinTok, and 68% say it has improved their financial situation at home. This positive impact is fueling plans for increased usage in 2025, with 53% of users intending to rely on FinTok even more.
Popular FinTok Trends of 2024
Some of the year’s most searched and tried trends include:
- Budgeting and saving (25%)

These trends reflect a desire for financial stability and empowerment, especially among younger users who are actively seeking ways to manage their money effectively.
Challenges and Trust Building
While FinTok has gained traction, trust in digital financial advice is still growing. Notably:
- 15% of Gen Z have never met with a financial advisor or bank worker in person, compared to 27% of baby boomers.
- Some users remain cautious about taking advice from social media, with 44% agreeing that those not on social media are missing out culturally and financially.
As FinTok continues to evolve, platforms like Chime and certified financial planners emphasize the importance of cross-verifying online advice with credible resources.
The Future of FinTok
The popularity of FinTok underscores the digital age’s influence on financial literacy. Nearly one-third (32%) of Americans admit they’re embarrassed to ask loved ones for financial guidance, but FinTok offers a private, non-judgmental space to learn. In fact, many users believe they now have more financial knowledge than their peers.
In 2025, FinTok is expected to play an even bigger role in helping Americans:
- Get out of debt (37%)
- Start businesses (19%)
- File taxes (16%)
As Rianka R. Dorsainvil, Chime’s Consumer Certified Financial Planner, states:
“FinTok is the perfect example of how social media has evolved in a short period of time. It’s a great opportunity to both learn new things and expand your current knowledge.”
A Revolution in Financial Literacy
From budgeting to passive income, FinTok is reshaping how Americans learn about and manage their finances. Its combination of accessibility, relatability, and community has made it a trusted source for millions. While traditional advice from family and financial advisors remains valuable, the rise of FinTok reflects a shift toward digital, democratized financial education.
So, whether you’re curious about the latest money-saving trend or looking to improve your financial literacy, FinTok might just be the perfect place to start. Just remember to pair your newfound knowledge with trusted sources and professional advice when needed.
